Local surfer Antonio Cardoso dazzled by a beautiful huge wave at Nazare

This picture was taken on the 10th February 2017 on a day that started kind of slow but got bigger and bigger by the hour. This is the closest spot on land you can be from the waves and on these big days it's my favorite place to feel the energy of the ocean. It's quite surreal how close you can be from such an enormous amount of ocean power and definitely an experience that no one stays indifferent. My friend Antonio Cardoso was next to me and I took the opportunity to get him in the frame absolutely frothing with this enormous and beautiful set. For this shot I used a 24mm lens on a cropped sensor (around 35mm full frame). My intention was to show a bit more of the arena and the total shape of the wave and also keep the subject in focus. Although it's a focal length that doesn't compress the different focal planes like a big zoom, it sure works for showcasing how epic the lineup on Nazare is. If you look closely you can see the jet skis on the outside and have a better notion of how big these waves were. I absolutely love this A-frames on the 1st peak, they're super gnarly and are my favorite waves to shoot on the big days.
