Here’s Lucas Chumbo being demolished by a Nazare train after paddling and surfing a middle size wave. Paddling at Nazare is definitely not an easy task. With giant waves breaking all over the place, trying to find the best spot to wait is a tough task. Even if you’re at the right place, you still have to paddle as if your life depends on it to match the high speed of the wave and then complete the drop without getting smashed by the lip. If you ride the wave successfully that’s only half the game. You better wish to end up at a place where no other wave will break or be lucky enough to be picked up by a jet ski.
This sequence was taken on the 24th of October 2016 and I believe it was Chumbo's first time surfing big Nazare. He did everything right but ended up getting caught by the second wave. Not much to do except keep calm and let the wave do its thing. As Garrett McNamara once told me “if you ever get caught by a big wave, enjoy the ride”. Easier said than done but completely true.
Lucas Chumbo turned out to conquer Nazare and it’s one (if not the most) exciting big wave surfer in the world.
