Story behind the image:

This is probably my favorite shot I’ve taken during a big swell, the date was the 1st of November 2015.
Shooting at Nazare from beach level can be very challenging but also provides some incredible moments like this.
I love how the wave created a few triangles, two dark, one white. It kind of reminds me of pumpkin eyes, or some pyramids. I guess there’s some room for interpretation (Rorschach style).
Bear in mind this was 2015, there was already a bit of a crowd on the cliff watching the big waves but nothing like nowadays. The beach was pretty much empty so It was super cool to get these three people by the shore which helped a lot in giving some proportion to the wave and making the image more powerful and dramatic.
I remember posting this first image and people were laughing at the guy on the left fishing during this giant swell. I later zoomed on the guy and he actually has a phone in his hands, but there’s a strip of water behind him that makes it look like a fishing rod. So no, he’s not looking for some beaten up fishes.
Some of my favorite shots were taken on this moody day. The waves were breaking really close to shore, a-frames, top to bottom. Garrett McNamara caught a beautiful left, super gnarly, probably one of his best rides at Nazare.
These are the kind of days that really get me stoked to be at the beach and I always hope there’s more like these every season.
