This unexpected foil session took place on the 17th February 2020. For 3 hours, when everyone else had finished their morning surf, Laird, Benny and a few others took advantage of an almost empty line up to flow on these immense moving mountains. It was kind of surreal actually. The morning was quite hectic, lots of teams out, super busy, then everyone went to rest and have lunch. But the waves kept pumping, huge lines coming in. I stayed on the cliff to continue shooting and then they started foiling. It was an unusual sight, watch them flow on the top of these monsters. Apparently, the wave energy is so strong on the face of the wave that their best option is to ride on the top. This gotta be an incredible feeling for sure! Filmmaker Nuno Dias was standing next to me shooting video and we were having a blast watching these guys doing history. Obviously, legend Laird Hamilton surfing big Nazare was something a lot of people wouldn't think it would ever happen so these photos of him made quite an impact and ran on a bunch of media including Esquire Magazine.
